Bukalapak says it now has 104.9 million registered users, 70% of which come from outside the largest cities in the expanding archipelago.

Bukalapak, which translates as “to open a stall” in Bahasa, started out as an Amazon-like online marketplace in 2010 after the company’s co-founder Achmad Zaky realized he could help mom and dad shops or warungs during a visit to his hometown. increase their sales by selling their goods online. The 23-year-old student teamed up with his classmates Nugroho Herucahyono and Fajrin Rasyid to create Bukalapak’s website with a capital of around $5.

The platform later expanded its shopping categories from physical products to digital products such as mobile data, electricity tokens, game coupons, as well as financial services such as mutual funds and gold investments.

2017, Bukalapak launched its online-to-offline (O2O) business. Called Mitra Bukalapak, the platform allows warungs to offer virtual goods to customers who are not connected to the internet. It also helps store owners replenish their stock by connecting with distributors of consumer products.

“We are not saying we will only play O2O or do e-commerce only,” says Kaimuddin. “We want to be a commercial company”

Kaimuddin and his team would personally visit warungs across the country to understand their needs. When the pandemic hit, they moved the meetings online and quickly posted videos in multiple local dialects to teach shopkeepers how to run their business safely.

Zaky was not only a co-founder but also CEO for the first ten years of Bukalapak’s existence. He was seen by many as one of Indonesia’s most successful entrepreneurs, forcing Bukalapak from its humble beginnings to become one of the country’s largest e-commerce firms.

But years of pursuing rapid growth had resulted in years of losses. The company reportedly laid off about 10% of its workforce in 2019 as part of its effort to improve productivity.

Earlier that same year, Zaky sparked an online backlash against Bukalapak when he made comments criticizing President Joko Widodo’s efforts to develop the country’s tech sector. The controversy was only settled after Widodo urged the public not to remove the app.

For now, Bukalapak’s strategy is to continue its full transformation into a trading platform through partnerships with companies that can offer free services such as financial transactions or logistics.

“We want to stay light and agile, move very, very fast, but use our ecosystem to provide all these services,” says Kaimuddin.
